Industry Certifications

Motivation

Industry has undergone an evolution in education and training needs. In the 1980's industry largely demanded Degree and Diploma graduates. These were found to be academically strong but lacking in practical skills. Gradually industry developed certifications programs. By the 1990s industry had turned to these as the strongest selection criteria. Now in the 200s industry is finding that people who are only industry certified are practically strong but lacking depth of understanding when required to work with new technologies. As a result industry is demanding a mix of academic skills and industry certifications.

Areas of certification

There are four major areas of IT industry certification.


Hardware Skills Certification

This relates to setting up, maintaining and repairing computer hardware and related operating systems. typically focused on the PC and PC operating systems like Windows, MacOS and Linux. 

Typical certifications in this area include those designed by CompTIA, like A+, Linux+,


Networking skill Certification

This type of certification relates to the operation of Local Area Networks (i.e. fleets of PCs). Typical certifications in this area include the Microsoft family of certifications (MCP, MCSA, MCSE), Novell's CNE, CompTIA's Net+ and Server+, etc

Internetworking Skills Certification

Certification in the area of interconnecting fleets of PC and in connection to the Internet is dominated by Cisco Certifications. Included in this area are also a variety of Security certifications. Cisco provides security certifications for Wide and Global area networks, other organisations like

Web Design Skills Certification

Certifications in this area are relatively new and growing in number. They include CompTIA, Macromedia, Adobe and others
